73 miles, five days and a rucksack

73 miles from Ulverston to Carlisle, over five days, solo and carrying everything I needed along the way. The Cumbria Way.

Part holiday, part personal challenge.

I’ve spent a lot of time walking this year, and having made some fairly significant changes to my health, I wanted to put that progress to the test. I’d never attempted a multi-day hike like this before.

It wasn’t all glorious scenery and sunshine.

The day heading into Langdale was particularly difficult. It had been drizzling for much of the day, I’d barely seen another person, and the miles were starting to take their toll.

The following day was quite different.

Reaching the top of Stake Pass was a real highlight. The clouds began to clear, the landscape opened up, and a rainbow stretched across the valley. Quite the contrast to the day before.

Walking through the Lake District gave me an opportunity to experience somewhere I already loved in a completely different way. I’ve travelled through it on two and four wheels plenty of times, but seeing it on foot, at a much slower pace, made me appreciate it even more.

By the time I reached Carlisle, I was physically broken, but with a real sense of accomplishment.

More importantly, I really enjoyed it. And despite the aching legs, I’ve come away wanting to do more.
